Artist Nick Gustafson’s painting of a cheetah running rapid fire across the canvas uses blurring to achieve the effect of blazing motion. The cheetah’s hind legs are fully extended after a powerful stride which has apparently propelled the animal off the ground entirely. His sleek, muscular body, is fully extended and his forearms are cocked in, all of which further contributes to the aerodynamic, in-flight quality of this running beast. As is typical with animal art, the detailed focus on the animal subject is enjoyed at the cost of some background detail. Nevertheles, the greens and yellows are sufficient to suggest the cheetah’s jungle domain.
Often, audio can enhance the animal portrait by providing ambient content which alludes to background – in this case the presumed jungle or plain. But in this case, Lee Loonygoon’s brilliant track is all about the cheetah, his sounds and his motions. It is the speed and panning of drum and synth loops which additionally animates the energetic painting. About a third of the way through we get the startling cheetah scream, unexpectedly high-pitched, and all the more intimidating for it.
